Expanded Investigative Powers for Law Enforcement
Another section of the bill introduces new tools allowing law enforcement to request information from businesses and service providers.
These tools are described in the legislation as “information demands.”
The bill states:
“A designated official may require a person or entity to provide information that is reasonably required for the administration or enforcement of this Act.” — Parliament of Canada, Bill C-2.
During debate in the House of Commons, recorded in Hansard, government representatives explained the intent of the legislation.
“Our government is proposing additional tools for law enforcement to disrupt criminal networks that operate across our borders and increasingly rely on digital infrastructure.” — House of Commons Debates (Hansard), 45th Parliament.
Civil liberties organizations have raised questions about how expanded information-request powers may interact with existing privacy protections.
